Well my friends and well-wishers, I'm afraid that, do to a long list of unfortunate, unforeseen, undesirable, unsettling, unceremonious - alright I'm done - circumstances, Krunal and I had to cancel our planned Smash Brothers: Melee tournament. We had a good thing going, but we've had some difficult finding keeping in touch with our host. Also, we were never able to devise a way to sell tickets on campus without Krunal or I actually being in Anaheim. So, it is with great disappointment, sadness, and whatnot that Krunal and I have resigned to cancel the Smash Brothers: Melee tournament.

We might give it a shot again some other time, but, for now, the CGC Smash Brothers: Melee Tournament is off the books, I'm afraid.

Also, if any of my four sponsors are reading this, do not be alarmed, I'll send you a refund.

Things to Know Before You Go:

Participants should familiarize themselves with the rules and regulations of the tournament, and probably take a glance at the prize info section to see what they might win...that's about it, I think that covers all you need to know.

But here's a quick list just in case:

  • Tickets are $15 for participants (or $12 if you order early; see registration page for more info), and $5 for audience members.
  • The prize money is $200 + ($2 x #of participants over 100).
  • Matches will proceed as follows:

    • 4-player versus mode matches. All items will be turned on and set to 'medium.' All levels and characters available. Levels will be selected at random. Each match lasts five minutes. First place winner (most kills) of each round will advance.
    • Once there are eight or less participants remaining, we will move to 2-player versus mode matches. Same rules will apply. This will continue until only 2 participants remain. Then we will move onto the final match.
    • The final match will be a one-on-one match. Unlike previous matches, the two remaining participants may decide and agree where the final match will be held (or they can opt for it to be randomly selected again). The winner of this match takes home the prize money.

  • Disqualifications may result if...

    • A player pauses the game without cause.
    • A player resets the machine, or does an in-game reset.
    • A player interferes with the hardware (unplugging controllers, turning off the machine, removing memory card, etc).
    • A player engages in excessive 'trash talking' (a couple jests now and then probably won't raise too many eyebrows, but if it gets out of hand tournament officials will interfere, particularly in cases of profanity).
    • A player attacks another player, or attempts to physically interfere with his playing (knocks the controller out of his hand, drums on his shoulders to distract him, etc.).
    • A player does not allow a level to be selected randomly (if this happens, we will also have to start the match over).
    • A player engages in any other form of cheating or unacceptable that I haven't thought of yet.

  • The more participants, the bigger the winnings. Those of you who are interested should increase your potential prize money by getting others to participate along with you.
